Jiufen and Jinguashi (collectively known as the "Shuijinjiu" area) boast stunning mountain and sea views with different scenery throughout the four seasons, making them popular choices for day trips or two-day trips from Taipei.
The four seasons of Jiufen are often described as: "Spring cherry blossoms, summer cool breeze, autumn silver grass, winter mist and clouds."
| Season | Months | Main Features & Activities | Recommended Highlights & Attractions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar - May | Mountain Town Strolls, Late Cherry Blossoms | Perfect for leisurely walks along Jishan Street and Shuqi Road, enjoying the tranquil moments with mountain mist. Scattered cherry blossoms can be seen in some areas. |
| Summer | Jun - Aug | Red Lantern Festival / Mining Art Festival | Jiufen Red Lantern Festival (usually mid-June to mid-July): Evening illuminations showcase the dreamlike scene of Jiufen Old Street surrounded by a sea of red lanterns. Mining Art Festival: Art exhibitions and workshops presenting mining history and culture (usually during summer vacation). |
| Autumn | Sep - Nov | Silver Grass Season | During the silver grass blooming season, Baoshi Mountain Trail, Buyan Pavilion, and Shumeiping in Jinguashi offer spectacular views of silvery-white grass swaying in the wind. |
| Winter | Dec - Feb | Misty Mountains, Warm Tea Tasting | This season has a high chance of mountain mist, adding a magical "City of Sadness" atmosphere to Jiufen. We recommend enjoying tea and the misty views at a traditional tea house. |
Public transportation is recommended for visiting Jiufen and Jinguashi, as parking is limited and mountain roads are narrow. Travel time from Taipei city center is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
